The challenge
Cancer Care Map required a robust system migration to overcome severe search latency and scale their rapidly expanding directory without compromising accessibility.
Operating as a vital UK-wide directory, Cancer Care Map connects patients, families, and healthcare professionals with critical physical, emotional, and practical care resources. However, their legacy infrastructure relied on a static Gatsby frontend that restricted dynamic query handling and severely limited administrative control over content publishing.
With the backend database projected to grow rapidly from 5,000 to over 100,000 records, the platform faced significant performance concerns, including query response latency and fuzzy-match search errors. Because users are often in vulnerable, high-stress situations, any failure in search usability or system availability directly impacts their ability to access essential care.
The solution
We executed a full-stack modernization of the ecosystem, transitioning the core infrastructure to a decoupled, high-availability architecture. We optimized the search algorithms and engineered scalable integration tools.

We transitioned the core website to an optimized WordPress CMS and migrated records into a highly secure Amazon RDS instance, giving editors complete publishing control.

Fuzzy Search & Query Tuning
We restructured the primary search algorithms to prioritize exact matches and geographic proximity via the Google Maps API, preventing irrelevant results and search errors.

Platform-Independent Iframe Widget
We engineered a lightweight JavaScript iframe application and a custom Laravel admin panel, enabling partner organizations to securely embed the directory using token-based authentication.

Continuous System Telemetry
We integrated real-time monitoring through AWS CloudWatch to track database query speeds and API latency, allowing proactive resolution of server performance issues.
